It's Alive Labs

While majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Boise State, I was also a toy engineering intern for Caleb Chung--the inventor of the popular 90s toy, the Furby, at his Boise based toy development company, It's Alive Labs.

The Pandemic

When we went into lockdown, it was hard to prototype toy mechanisms while having limited access to the 3D printers in the office. I bought my own 3D printer so I could continue working from home. I also posted my very first TikTok video: me using that first 3D printer to print all of its parts in pink, then taking it apart and completely rebuilding it again. My TikTok followers helped me name her: Printcess (the printer in the GIF below).

3D PrinTcess is Born

Shortly after I bought my 3D printer, Caleb (furby inventor) decided that the pandemic was great opportunity to retire. I was pretty sad because I wish I could have kept on creating toys under the mentorship of all the creative geniuses at It's Alive Labs until the day I died. But, in the meantime, I kept myself busy with senior level engineering classes via Zoom + 3D printing fun projects and posting them on TikTok. Several of my 3D printing projects ended up going viral, & every time, the comment section came to the same conclusion: "HOW DO WE BUY THAT FROM YOU?!" And thus, 3D Printcess (the company) was born...

The Slug Goes Viral

The slug was not my first 3D printing TikTok to go viral. Several things had blown up previously, but you can't start a business overnight. I had to learn how to create a website, register a business name, get a sales tax license in Idaho, etc. The day everything was ready to go, I randomly decided to print a slug and make a quick video, just to stay consistent with posting content while I finished getting my business stuff in order. It became my most viral video yet, and the comments were full of people asking me to sell them.

My First Product

After the slug went viral, I collected a waiting list for people who wanted one. I spent the next couple weeks using my two 3D printers making as many slugs as I could (only around 100). That very first slug drop sold out almost immediately (love you guys), and helped me buy a few more 3D printers.

Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge...& Beyond!

After the success of the very first slug drop, I competed in (and won) my track at the Idaho Entrepreneurship Challenge, for what I thought would become my 3D printing company. The success of the slug, as well as the prize money, helped me scale up to the thirty 3D printers I own today. I thought I was starting a 3D printing company...but flash forward 2 years, and the slug's popularity has consumed all day, everyday of my life, leaving me no time to develop or market new products (not complaining though....overwhelming demand has been a great problem to have).

Fidget Friendz

Since day one, I have been dreaming of what little creature I could launch next. However, all of my time has been spent manufacturing slugs, fixing printers (so they can keep making slugs), quality checking slugs, packaging slugs, and shipping slugs. I didn't have time to create any new animals while I tried to make sure as many people as possible could adopt a slug friend. Don't get me wrong...I *love* the slugs...but after 2.5 years of spending all day everyday making them, I am getting kind of burnt out, and am still not able to meet demand on my own. The time has come to outsource my manufacturing and shipping (not to mention storage, so that we can have our living room back). Working with a manufacturer & fulfillment center means that my time can be spent marketing and designing new animals (and again, I'm so excited that my living room will no longer be a slug storage center). My small business is about to grow into its teenager phase and I am so excited for this next step! Thank you to everyone who has been helping me pay the bills with your slug collections. Your support means the world, and I am so glad it has allowed me to continue my toy career!

More About Me

That sums up the slug story, so feel free to stop reading now. But if you want to know a little bit more about where I came from and what I did before becoming Sierra-the-Slug-Girl...you are free to read on until you get bored with my life story.

As of writing this, I am now 30 years old (but internally, I will forever be 12). I was born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, and now live in Boise. I was home schooled until 8th grade, when I started going to Xavier Charter School. My home schooling, combined with attending an arts centered school, definitely fostered my creativity. In case you are a friend of mine who has never believed me when I have said I *truly* was not a cool kid growing up: I promise you I am not kidding when I say I was an extremely awkward, bug obsessed home schooler. Please enjoy this picture from 2006 that I may regret putting on the internet??? All jokes aside, if I could go back in time, I would hug little Sierra and tell her to not let the world bully her out of being a curious, creative little weirdo (spoiler alert: don’t worry, she didn't).

2014-2015

Miss Idaho & Diabetes Advocacy

The years since graduating high school have been a whirlwind of incredible opportunities. In 2014, I was crowned Miss Idaho and went viral for wearing my insulin pump during the swimsuit portion of the Miss America competition. I went on to give 100+ speeches in over 30 states and write my book "Sugar Linings: Finding the Bright Side of Type 1 Diabetes".

Bike Beyond

I also rode my bike (yes, bicycle) from New York City to San Francisco alongside a team of 20 fellow type 1 diabetics (and a documentary crew). After I got a little burnt out on diabetes advocacy (which you can read about here, or listen to my interview about here), I returned to school at Boise State University to study mechanical engineering.

Back to School

In addition to being a toy engineering intern for Caleb, I also was undercover as the Boise State mascot, Buster Bronco, ended up graduating at the top of my Mechanical Engineering class and was named one of the top 10 students in the entire university for the class of spring 2022. I loved secretly being the mascot so much that I kept delaying my graduation. My the time senioritis finally caught up with me, I had completely my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, three minors (Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, and Biomedical Engineering), and two certificates (Mechanical Design and Mechatronics).

3D Printed Fashion

My most recent project was my viral 3D printed disco ball fashion collection. I was able to bring together my love of all things girly and fashion and my love of engineering and technology. Due to the global attention the collection got on social media, I was invited to Fiji Fashion Week and made my first international appearance as a fashion designer only a few short months into putting that dream into action. I feel like I've lived a gazillion lifetimes over the past decade, and I can't wait to see what my 30s hold!

I'm excited for you to join me as we continue this journey & live...
